The Stanford Educational Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY), a computer-based learning program originated for gifted learners, is being tried in the regular classrooms of Oakland, California, with much success. EPGY, teaches concepts by tailoring itself to the needs of each student. As described at their official website, EPGY is described as follows:
The Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) at Stanford University is a continuing project dedicated to developing and offering multimedia computerbased distance-learning courses. Combining technical and instructional expertise, EPGY provides high ability students of all ages with an individualized educational experience, optimized in both pace and content. Through EPGY, students have access to courses in a variety of subjects at levels ranging from kindergarten through advanced-undergraduate.
As a student tries to solve problems, the program either increases or reduces the level of difficulty of subsequent questions, depending on whether the answers given were correct. In this manner, EPGY attempts to educate by challenging students — without overwhelming them. The group featured in the linked article is trying the math portion on a pool of general learning students and have found that it improved the mathematics scores of all the students, regardless of level. It also helped them identify more potentially gifted students in the pool.
For more information on EPGY, please go to the Stanford EPGY website. There you will also find a list and brochure about distance learning courses available to prospective students.
